Design a SharePoint Intranet to allow for a custom brand that can be maintained by the client.
SCK has developed a wide range of custom software applications for the Pharmacy since 2001, all designed to lower costs, streamline internal processes and digitize the ever-growing volume of medical data. More recently, SCK worked with the Pharmacy to re-design their intranet using Microsoft SharePoint. This project included both a graphical redesign as well as the creation of custom SharePoint applications which will allow the Pharmacy to internally maintain the site in the future. The first task was to change the default SharePoint design and instead create one fully consistent with the look and feel of the Pharmacy’s own internal brand.
The Challenge
- Customize/personalize a SharePoint intranet, applying a design which represents the CCF Pharmacy’s look and feel.
- The navigation for the Intranet had to be flexible enough to allow the Pharmacy site administrators to add/edit SharePoint and non-SharePoint pages in any order. While SharePoint has a built-in navigation system that will create links based on SharePoint pages, some links would go to applications outside SharePoint. SCK had to come up with a solution in which the navigation could have SharePoint and non-SharePoint tabs existing side by side. Also, the post-launch site had to be maintained by Pharmacy staff, without SCK’s assistance.
- Allow Pharmacy to personalize the SharePoint site with custom graphical treatments that add visual cohesion to all the pages.

The Solution
- SCK worked with a committee comprised of a wide range of Pharmacy staff to create a design that best represented the department’s brand, as expressed in the site’s design. This committee included staff from all parts of the pharmacy: department heads, pharmacists, technicians, and members of the IT team.
- SCK developed a SharePoint feature that allowed the design to be applied, turned “on and off” by Pharmacy IT staff with a click of a button. In this way, the design could be applied to any new SharePoint sites created after the initial launch.
- SCK created a custom navigation system that would incorporate SharePoint pages and applications outside of SharePoint. This was managed by a list in which a page name and URL could be specified and ordered for use in the navigation. Again, the solution allowed Pharmacy site administrators to further customize the site without SCK’s involvement.
